My favorite article in October's OT Practice was "Stroke and Ankle Foot Orthotics." If you have not yet read it, the basics are that the writer, Diane Vitillo, was working with a stroke pt. who, like many stroke pt.'s, was having difficulty independently donning his AFO. So in true OT spirit, she went home to her garage found some supplies and built a device that she would later market as the AFO assist.
I love how in a medical environment that increasingly prizes rigidly standardized care, OTs continue to celebrate creativity and foster an I-can-build-that-in my-garage spirit.
