From my limited experience being in therapy gyms, I found that there is often background radio music playing a top hits station. I always thought it hard to believe that the elderly stroke patients I was working with were motivated by the latest Adele hit. The music seemed to cater to the therapists, rather than setup an environment for client success. It seemed like another distracting unknown for the client in a period where everything was feeling unfamiliar.
Wouldn't it be fun to alter the background music of your therapy space to make it client centered? It could be as easy as asking for client input and making a Pandora channel.
This video went viral several months ago. In it neuroanatomist, Oliver Sacks, discusses the power of music for nursing home patients. Enjoy!
