Step 1: Look up your OT/OTA license.

To begin the process, I always double-check that my license is displaying correctly. You can look up your Massachusetts occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant license here.

Step 2: Confirm the Massachusetts OT continuing education requirements.

It’s always good to double check for any updates to your 2025 licensing cycle. (One year, I completed ALL of my state of Nebraska requirements only to find out that they were waived due to COVID. 😭)

But, to get you going here is the information I found, with links to where I found it.

Here are the basic OT/OTA CEU requirements in Massachusetts:

Attestation due at time of license renewal, every two years on the licensee’s birthday

How many hours are required?

  • OTs/OTAs need 24 points every two years

1 point = 1 contact hour for most activities.

Requirements:

  • Education topics should relate to your occupational therapy practice
  • 2 points must be related to ethics, laws and regulations governing practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • You may be audited and required to show documentation proving completing of your continuing education, so hold on to your certificates of completion for at least four years after the renewal period you earned them in

There are limits on the number of points you can earn for certain activities, such as publishing, presenting, or completing academic coursework. There is no limit on points earned completing AOTA approved Continuing Competence Programs (such as OT Potential courses!)

BOARD OF ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS
259 CMR 7.00: CONTINUING COMPETENCE

(1) Licensed physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, occupational therapists, and
occupational therapy assistants (hereinafter collectively “physical therapy and occupational
therapy professionals”) are required, as a condition of license renewal, to complete a minimum
of 24 points of Board recognized activities for maintaining continuing competence during the
preceding biennial renewal period.

For each renewal period, each physical and occupational therapy professional’s continuing competency points must include two points in ethics, laws and regulations governing practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, or some combination thereof.

For new physical therapy or occupational therapy professionals licensed by examination, this continuing competence requirement commences following their first renewal period after initial licensure.

At OT Potential, our courses are all built around helping you get new evidence into practice.

Step 4: Renew your license. 🎉

Ok, now it’s time for the big moment.

You can renew your license online.

Note: Licensed occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants in the Commonwealth of Massachussets should no longer use the designation “OTR/L” and “COTA/L.” Instead, OT practitioners should sign all medical and legal documents with their name, either “OT” or “OTA,” and their license number.

Conclusion
