Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF)

The Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF2) asks the adults around a child — and older children themselves — how well that child manages the everyday self-management skills grouped under executive function: stopping and thinking before acting, switching gears, keeping emotions steady, getting started, holding information in mind, planning ahead, and keeping track of belongings.

Parent and teacher forms cover ages 5 to 18 with 63 items; adolescents 11 to 18 complete a 55-item self-report. Nine clinical scales roll into three indexes, Behavior Regulation, Emotion Regulation, and Cognitive Regulation, plus an overall Global Executive Composite. Because it asks about behavior at home and at school rather than performance in a testing room, it captures the situations where executive function usually breaks down.
