Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ)
What It Measures
The Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) asks a parent about a school-age child's sleep over one typical recent week. It was built to catch both kinds of sleep problem at once — the behavioral ones, like fighting bedtime or needing a parent in the room, and the medical ones, like snoring or breathing pauses.
Items are rated as usually (5 to 7 nights), sometimes (2 to 4), or rarely (0 or 1), with some reverse-scored so a higher total always means more disturbance. Thirty-three scored items feed eight subscales: bedtime resistance, sleep onset delay, sleep duration, sleep anxiety, night wakings, parasomnias, sleep-disordered breathing, and daytime sleepiness. A total of 41 or above flags a likely sleep problem worth investigating.
