Why Jane is Our Featured EMR for Therapy Start-ups
In our post on The Best EMR Systems for OTs, PTs, and SLPs, we give Jane App the nod as our featured EMR for small start-ups. They have earned this distinction because Jane is the only EMR we hear solo-practitioners say they love.
We constantly hear about:
- The easy-to-use interface,
- The amazing customer service, and
- How easy scheduling is.
Personally, I’ve become obsessed with making therapy easier to access for the many, many people who need it. So having an easy scheduling screen is what has completely set Jane App apart in my mind. (See how I featured a Jane App user in my SEO for Therapists Guide.) Most therapy EMRs still make patients call for their first appointment, and THEN get a patient portal for scheduling.
Jane App Pricing: A Clean Breakdown
Jane App’s pricing is based on the number of practitioners in your clinic, which makes it easy to calculate your exact monthly overhead as you grow. Here’s a brief overview of how the three plans break down (see Jane’s full pricing page for the most up to date pricing and for more details on what’s included with each plan).
| Plan | Base Price | Includes | Cost Per Additional Full-Time Practitioner | Cost Per Additional Part-Time Practitioner |
| Balance | $54/month | 1 practitioner, up to 20 appointments/month | N/A (single practitioner only) | N/A |
| Practice | $79/month | 1 full-time practitioner, unlimited appointments, online scheduling | $35/month | $17.50/month |
| Thrive | $99/month | 1 full-time practitioner, unlimited appointments, advanced scheduling and marketing tools | $40/month | $20/month |
A few details to note:
- Full-time means a practitioner who books 24 or more hours per week. Part-time means fewer than 24 hours per week.
- Admin and support staff who don’t have appointments booked under their name are free on all plans, which is a nice perk for small practices with a front desk person.
- The Balance plan is a good entry point if you’re just starting out and seeing fewer than 20 clients per month (you can always upgrade your plan as you grow).
- Licenses (a.k.a. user profiles) can’t be split or shared between more than one person.
- Need an AI Scribe? Jane App has a built-in co-pilot that can listen to your sessions and generate smart SOAP notes for an extra $15/month per practitioner.
You can use Jane’s pricing calculator to plug in your exact number of full-time and part-time practitioners—as well as any add-ons you’re interested in—and see your precise monthly cost before you sign up.
What You Need to Know About Jane App and Accepting Insurance
For a long time, Jane App was thought of primarily as a tool for cash-based or private pay practices here in the US. This reputation made sense, as the platform was built around a clean, modern experience for scheduling, documentation, and payments—but US insurance billing wasn’t seamlessly integrated.
That has changed.
Starting around July 2023, Jane began enabling insurance billing for therapists in the US. Today, offers steadily expanding integrated US insurance billing through a partnership with Claim.MD, a medical claims clearinghouse. With this integration, you can:
- Collect patient insurance info right on your intake forms.
- Run real-time eligibility checks before appointments.
- Submit claims (individually or in batches) directly from Jane.
- Receive Electronic Remittance Advices (ERAs) and process them inside Jane.
- Automatically send patient payment requests for any remaining balances after claims settle.
The integration handles the full revenue cycle—from eligibility verification through collections—without the need to jump between multiple platforms.
For practices looking to take insurance, there are state-by-state differences for US practitioners. So, I recommend you sign up for Jane App for a free month, then book a free demo consultation to get into the details for your specific location and use case.
A few important cost details to know about insurance billing in Jane App:
The insurance billing feature is available as an add-on to the Practice or Thrive plans for $20/month (plus $5/month per additional full-time practitioner or $2.50/month per part-time practitioner). It is not available on the Balance plan.
Additionally, you will need a separate Claim.MD account, as this is not included in your Jane subscription. The good news is that Jane customers get a 10% discount on Claim.MD pricing. Thanks to that savings, Claim.MD plans for Jane users are priced as follows:
| Claim.MD Plan | Regular Price | Jane Customer Price |
| Unlimited Claims | $120/month | $108/month |
| Small Volume (100 claims/mo) | $60/month | $54/month |
| Basic (pay-per-use) | $30/month | $27/month |
So, for a solo practitioner on the Practice plan who wants insurance billing, you’re looking at a total cost of roughly $79 + $20 + $54 = $153 per month, depending on your claim volume. I’d definitely suggest running those numbers against your current billing setup. (See Claim.MD’s Jane-specific pricing for reference.)
Cancel at Any Time if Jane is Not right for You
One of the great things about Jane App is that you do not get trapped into long-term contracts. The billing is truly month to month. If you sign up using our promo code, you can cancel at any time during that first free month, and you will not be billed.
A Note from Me
Full disclosure: Jane App is an official partner of OT Potential. When you use the Jane App promo code OTPOTENTIAL, you get your first month free—and Jane gives us a small portion of the sale at no extra cost to you. It’s a win-win that helps us continue creating free educational resources for the therapy community!
I want to be upfront about that, because I think you deserve to know. But I also genuinely believe Jane is one of the better options out there for OTs running private or group practices, particularly now that the insurance billing piece is in place. If you have questions about whether Jane App is the right fit for your situation, drop them in the comments below and I’ll do my best to help!
