What It Measures

The Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire identifies whether someone is a morning lark, a night owl, or somewhere in between. It asks not what time a person has to get up, but what time they would choose if they were entirely free to plan their day.

Nineteen questions cover preferred waking and bedtimes, when a person feels most alert, how they feel in the first half hour after waking, when they would rather exercise or do demanding mental work, and how tired they get in the evening. Total scores run 16 to 86. Above 59 indicates a morning type, below 41 an evening type, and 42 to 58 intermediate — where most people fall.
