What It Measures

The REEL-4 identifies language problems in children too young to test directly. Rather than asking a one-year-old to perform, the examiner interviews the caregiver who spends every day with them about what the child does and does not do.

Two core subtests make up the Language Ability composite. Receptive Language covers what the child takes in — orienting to sound, recognising names, understanding words and simple instructions. Expressive Language covers what they produce, from early vocalisation and jargon through single words to two-word combinations. A supplementary Vocabulary Inventory adds a more detailed picture of the words a child actually uses. Results come as standard scores, percentile ranks, and age equivalents.

Additional Notes

Licensing Notes: The complete kit includes the Examiner's Manual, 25 Examiner Record Booklets, and 25 Vocabulary Inventory Forms each for Forms A and B. Forms are consumables. Reproduction requires publisher permission.

Learn More: The REEL-4 is explicitly built for Early Childhood Intervention programs under P.L. 99-457, which is why it appears in IFSP eligibility work.
