Wolf Motor Function Test (WMFT)
What It Measures
The Wolf Motor Function Test (WMFT) is a hands-on exam that checks how well a person can use their affected arm and hand after a stroke or brain injury. A therapist times how quickly the person completes everyday tasks such as lifting a can, turning a key, folding a towel, and rates the quality of each movement. Together, these scores show how much arm and hand function has returned during recovery.
Occupational and physical therapists typically use the widely adopted 17-item version of the WMFT, which combines timed functional tasks with strength-based tasks, most often with adults and older adults who have mild-to-moderate upper-extremity involvement after stroke or traumatic brain injury. It fits well in inpatient rehabilitation and outpatient hand therapy programs focused on stroke and TBI recovery, and published minimal detectable change values help clinicians judge whether a score change reflects real improvement
