Your Current Life Situation Survey
What It Measures
The Your Current Life Situation Survey (YCLS) is a screening questionnaire that asks about a person's everyday social and financial circumstances. It measures things like housing stability, food access, transportation, childcare, debt, and social isolation, rather than a specific clinical condition. It was developed by Kaiser Permanente to capture a range of social and economic needs.
Kaiser Permanente's Care Management Institute created the tool primarily to identify social needs among patients at risk of high health care utilization, and it has been used in primary care and community-based settings to guide referrals to social services and community resources. Because it's a needs screener rather than a validated psychometric instrument in the traditional sense, it's best paired with clinical judgment about which findings warrant a referral or follow-up.
