What It Measures

The Aberrant Behavior Checklist – Second Edition (ABC-2) is a 58-item checklist. It measures behaviors in children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Any adult who knows the person well can fill it out: a parent, teacher, direct care worker, nurse, or psychologist. The items fall into five areas: irritability, social withdrawal, stereotypic (repeated) behavior, hyperactivity and noncompliance, and inappropriate speech.

The ABC-2 is made for people ages 5 through adulthood. It helps teams see which behaviors cause the most trouble and track changes over time. Two forms are available. The Community form is used at home, in schools, and at work or community programs. The Residential form is used in residential settings. Read the scores by subscale: the ABC was not built to give one valid total score, so the subscale profile carries the clinical meaning.
