Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy: General (FACT-G)
What It Measures
The FACT-G is the core quality of life questionnaire that the whole FACIT family is built around. It asks how someone with cancer is actually doing — across their body, their relationships, their mood, and their daily life — rather than how the disease is responding.
Twenty-seven statements are rated from not at all to very much, describing the past seven days. Four subscales sit underneath: physical wellbeing (7 items), social and family wellbeing (7), emotional wellbeing (6), and functional wellbeing (7). Higher scores mean better quality of life, so negatively worded items are reverse-scored before summing. Because it is diagnosis-neutral, disease-specific modules bolt onto it — the FACT-B for breast cancer being one example.

Learn More: Total scores run 0 to 108. Two scoring rules matter: a subscale can be prorated if more than 50% of its items were answered, and a total score is only considered acceptable if the overall response rate exceeds 80% — at least 22 of 27 items.
