What It Measures

The Assessment of Work Performance (AWP) watches someone actually doing a work task and rates how effectively and appropriately they perform it — not through self-report, but through direct, structured observation. It's designed to work across any type of job or work-related difficulty, whether the setting is a real workplace or a simulated one.

Grounded in the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO), the AWP rates 14 skill items across three domains: motor skills, process skills, and communication/interaction skills. Each are measured on a 4-point scale from "incompetent performance" to "competent performance." Occupational therapists use it with adolescents and adults in mental health and vocational rehabilitation settings, including with people recovering from cancer treatment, to inform return-to-work planning; because it involves observing an actual work task, a full assessment typically takes 2.5 to 4 hours.
