What It Measures

The PEDI measures three different things about a child's daily function, and keeping them separate is the point. What can the child do? How much help does the caregiver actually give? And what has been changed in the environment to make it possible?

Those questions run across three domains: self-care, mobility, and social function. The Functional Skills scale covers 197 discrete abilities, each scored as capable or not. The Caregiver Assistance scale rates 20 broader activities by how much help is needed, 0 to 5. The Modifications scale rates those same 20 activities by what adaptations are in place — none, child-oriented, rehabilitation equipment, or extensive. Scores can be read against age norms or as scaled scores.
