What It Measures

The FIM instrument is designed to measure the “burden of care” for patients. "Burden of care" refers to an approximation of the number of minutes or hours another person must spend providing personal care assistance to a patient in a home setting in order to accomplish the common daily tasks of personal care: 1.) Mobility 2.) Self-care 3.) Sphincter management 4.) Communication 5.) Social cognition
