What It Measures

Ages & Stages Questionnaires, Third Edition (ASQ-3) is a developmental screener that a parent or caregiver fills out for a child between 1 and 66 months. Each questionnaire asks about 30 things the child may be doing, and parents answer yes, sometimes, or not yet after trying the activity with their child. An open-ended section lets them raise any concerns in their own words.

Twenty-one age-specific questionnaires cover the activities of children throughout the age-span screening five areas: communication, gross motor, fine motor, problem solving, and personal-social. A professional scores each area and compares it to cut-offs. Scores in the monitoring zone flag a child to re-screen and watch; scores below the cut-off point toward a full evaluation.
