Mullen Scales of Early Learning (MESL)

The Mullen Scales of Early Learning covers development from birth through five and a half years in one continuous assessment. It works through play-based tasks the child does directly, with parent help where needed.

Five scales are administered: gross motor, visual reception, fine motor, receptive language, and expressive language. Four of them — all but gross motor — combine into the Early Learning Composite, an overall picture of cognitive functioning. The gross motor scale stops at 33 months. Items within each scale run in order of difficulty, and testing stops after three consecutive failures, so a child is not marched through tasks well beyond their level. Results come as T-scores, percentiles, and age equivalents.

Learn More: one thing worth noting is the normative data is more than thirty years old, which matters when a standard score determines eligibility. The MSEL is nonetheless heavily used in autism and rare disease research, partly because it produces age equivalents that keep working for older children functioning well below their chronological age.
