Movement Assessment Battery for Children | Second Edition Movement ABC-2

The Movement ABC-2 identifies children whose movement difficulties are significant enough to need help. A child works through eight tasks — things like posting coins, threading beads, drawing a trail, catching a beanbag, throwing at a target, balancing on one leg, and walking heel-to-toe.

Tasks group into three areas: manual dexterity, aiming and catching, and balance. Three age bands cover 3 to 6, 7 to 10, and 11 to 16, with the tasks getting harder in each. Raw scores convert to age-adjusted standard scores and percentiles for each component and for a Total Test Score. A traffic-light system reads the result: green above the 15th percentile, amber from the 5th to 15th, red at or below the 5th.

Learn More: The kit contains two instruments that are often confused. The Performance Test is the 8-task assessment described above. The Checklist is a separate 30-item observational tool for ages 5 to 12, completed by a teacher or parent about how the child manages motor activities in daily life and how they feel about them — it adds about 10 minutes and is a screening rather than a diagnostic instrument. The record form also includes sections for recording factors that may have affected performance and qualitative observations.
