Our bread and butter as occupational therapy professionals is helping clients leverage their daily occupations and habits to transform their health. While terms like “occupational performance” or "activities of daily living" can sometimes sound like jargon to those outside the profession, visual frameworks help translate what we do into clear, relatable concepts.

The graphic below visualizes our core treatment areas, with condition-specific considerations layered across each pillar and sleep serving as a foundational base.

In a survey of OT Potential members, we asked practitioners how well this framework reflects their day-to-day clinical practice. Here’s what we learned from the 160 respondents:

• Primary Area: Daily Activities/Movement emerged as the primary focus, selected by 61% of practitioners as the single best representation of their core work.

• Secondary Areas: Respondents strongly emphasized the multi-dimensional nature of OT when choosing a secondary pillar, with Sense of Purpose, Mental Health, Social Participation, and Safety standing out as essential additions to capture their full scope of practice.

How This Correlates to Lifestyle Medicine

OTs target these specific areas because everyday habits and routines are proven drivers of health outcomes. We aren’t alone in recognizing this connection—there is a powerful, natural overlap between occupational therapy and the core pillars of Lifestyle Medicine.

In recent literature—such as research on integrating cancer rehabilitation and lifestyle medicine in the RISE cancer survivorship clinic—our scope directly aligns with established lifestyle medicine pillars:
