Step 1: Look up your OT license.

To begin the process, I always double-check that my license is displaying correctly. You can check your registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency here.

Step 2: Confirm the Australia OT continuing professional development requirements.

It’s always good to double check for any updates to your 2025 renewal cycle. (One year, I completed ALL of my state of Nebraska requirements only to find out that they were waived due to COVID. 😭)

But, to get you going here is the information I found, with links to where I found it.

Here are the basic OT CPD requirements in Australia:

Due with registration renewal November 30 every year.

Note: OTs in Australia are required to attest to their completion of CPD requirements at the time of registration renewal. The OT Board of Australia randomly audits practitioners and may require you to submit your CPD portfolio as proof of completion of these requirements. It is recommended to hold on to your portfolio records for at least 5 years after completing an activity.

How many hours are required?

  • OT professionals need 20 hours

Requirements

  • 5+ hours in an interactive setting with other practitioners
  • Topics must focus on improving client outcomes and experiences within your scope and setting of practice
  • Maintain a CPD portfolio of goals, activities, and reflections – You can download an example and template from the OT Board here!

To meet this standard, you must:

  1. complete at least 20 hours of CPD each year that:

    a. seeks to improve patient/client outcomes and experiences
    b. draws on the best available evidence, including well-established and accepted knowledge that is supported by research where possible, to inform good practice and decision-making
    c. contributes directly to improving your competence (performance and behaviour) and keeping you up to date in your chosen scope and setting of practice
    d. builds on your existing knowledge, and
    e. includes a minimum of five hours of CPD in an interactive setting with other practitioners.
  2. maintain a portfolio that documents your learning goals, and records all your planned CPD activities and your reflection on how these CPD activities are expected to improve, or have improved your practice.

The Board’s Guidelines: Continuing professional development provide further information about CPD requirements.

The Occupational Therapy Board of Australia’s CPD Guidelines provide flexible options for meeting learning goals. The guidelines state “All CPD which helps you maintain competence, stay up to date and is relevant to your scope of practice will meet the standard.”

This document from APHRA describes possible acceptable activities.

Step 3: Earn your CPD hours (discounts below)!

Ok, now that you know your requirements, it is time to start earning those CPDs! There are of course a lot of options out there, but we hope you consider checking out the courses offered by OT Potential.

Do OT Potential courses count toward the continuing professional development required to renew my registration?

Yes! But, please keep in mind the requirements above. Education topics must be directly applicable to your setting and scope of practice. They must also focus on improving clinical competence for improved client/patient outcomes and experiences.

This should be fairly easy to meet with our OT Potential Courses, as the vast majority are categorized as service delivery. (You can check this on the AOTA stamp on each course.)

Do OT Potential courses count toward the requirement for CPD in an interactive setting?

Yes, we offer monthly live webinars to help you meet your requirement for 5 interactive education hours!

The Occupational Therapy Board of Australia CPD Guidelines define interactive as “learning that involves a two-way flow of information and occurs with other practitioners, such as face to face or interactive online education.”

Where can Australia OT professionals get the best deals on CPDs?

At OT Potential, our courses are all built around helping you get new evidence into practice.

But, what good is evidence-based practice, if you are not reimbursed appropriately for it? Our local associations do SUCH important advocacy work, when it comes to reimbursement and scope of practice. That’s why we’ve made it part of our mission to support these associations.

So, we have this win-win proposition for you. Join OT Potential using the promo code “Australia” to receive a 15% discount—and we’ll donate 15% of your order to OTA.

👍 Price of OT Potential with your Australia discount = $84.15 (Reg $99)
🎉 Donation amount to OTA = $12.62

And, the best part is if you decide to renew, it will be at your discounted price. AND, we’ll make another donation to OTA.

This is one of the cheapest ways to earn all of your required Australia OT CPDs, and you can feel good doing it because you are giving back to your national association ❤️.
