Hawaii Early Learning Profile (HELP)

HELP is a long, ordered list of the things young children learn to do, used as both an assessment and a curriculum. Rather than producing a score, it identifies exactly where a child sits along each developmental sequence and what comes next.

The birth-to-three version covers 685 skills across six domains: cognitive, language, gross motor, fine motor, social-emotional, and self-help. Each skill carries an age range rather than a single month, because the literature does not agree on precisely when a skill emerges. Skills were selected for teachability — the project team included them because they could actually be worked on. Because it is criterion-referenced, results describe what a child can do rather than ranking them against peers.
