Full OT/OTA CEU Requirements in Hawaii
There are no specific CE requirements for OT license renewal in Hawaii. However, HI OT professionals are required to maintain NBCOT certification, which requires 36 units of education every 3 year renewal cycle.
Here are the requirements for maintaining NBCOT certification:
These were copied from the 2026 National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy OTR & COTA Certification Renewal Handbook.
Accruing the Certification Renewal Requirements
Certificants must accrue at least 36 units during their renewal cycle. Units can be obtained through a combination of competency assessment units (CAUs) and/or professional development units (PDUs). Accepted activity types are listed on the Certification Renewal Activities Chart. Certificants who renewed their certification in 2023 are permitted to carry over up to 10 units earned during their 2020–2023 renewal cycle, provided that the 10 units were in excess of the 36 units required for their 2023 certification renewal. If audited, certificants must provide documentation from the previous cycle (2020–2023) to show the excess units being carried forward.
This doc goes on to describe other acceptable activities. I recommend you read the rules in full.
Steps for Renewing Your OT License
Step 1: Look up your OT/OTA license.
To begin the process, I always double-check that my license is displaying correctly. You can look up your Hawaii occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant license here.
Step 2: Confirm the Hawaii OT continuing education requirements.
It’s always good to double check for any updates to your licensing cycle. You can do so with the resources above. And, please reach out to me if you see any discrepancies.
Step 3: Earn your NBCOT PDU hours.
Ok, now that you know your requirements, it is time to start earning those PDUs! There are of course a lot of options out there, but we hope you consider checking out the courses offered by OT Potential.
Step 4: Renew your license. 🎉
Ok, now it’s time for the big moment.
You can renew your license online.
Do OT Potential Online Courses Count as CEUs?
Yes! You can learn more in our post: How OT Potential Helps Meet Your CEU Requirements.
Keep in mind, our podcast-based courses fall under NBCOT Professional Development Activity 19: Workshops/Courses/Independent Learning. Activities under activity 19 count as 1.25 units, so you would need to complete 29 courses over the 3 year cycle.
Conclusion
Hopefully, you found this post helpful!
