Step 1: Look up your OT/OTA license.

To begin the process, I always double-check that my license is displaying correctly. You can look up your Iowa occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant license here.

Step 2: Confirm the Iowa OT continuing education requirements.

It’s always good to double check for any updates to your 2025 licensing cycle. (One year, I completed ALL of my state of Nebraska requirements only to find out that they were waived due to COVID. 😭)

But, to get you going here is the information I found, with links to where I found it.

Here are the basic OT/OTA CEU requirements in Iowa:

Due at time of license renewal, every two years on the 15th of the licensee’s birth month.

How many hours are required?

  • OTs need 30 hours of continuing education every two years
  • OTAs need 15 hours of continuing education every two years

Requirements:

  • Education hours should contribute directly to your professional competency
  • CEU topics must “integrally relate to the practice of the profession”
  • Courses must be taught by qualified instructors
  • A certificate of completion from the course sponsor is required

Note: OT professionals in Iowa cannot carryover continuing education hours from one licensing cycle to the next, so you’ll need to earn all of your hours within the 2 years before your renewal date.

AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSISTANTS

481—805.2(272C) Continuing education requirements.

805.2(1) The biennial continuing education compliance period shall extend for a two-year period that begins on the sixteenth day of the licensee’s birth month and ends two years later on the fifteenth day of the birth month.

a. Requirements for occupational therapist licensees. Each biennium, each person who is licensed to
practice as an occupational therapist in this state will have the responsibility to finance the cost and be
required to complete a minimum of 30 hours of continuing education approved by the board.

b. Requirements for occupational therapy assistant licensees. Each biennium, each person who is
licensed to practice as an occupational therapy assistant in this state will be required to complete a
minimum of 15 hours of continuing education approved by the board.

805.2(2) Requirements of new licensees. Those persons licensed for the first time shall not be
required to complete continuing education as a prerequisite for the first renewal of their licenses.
Continuing education hours acquired any time from the initial licensing until the second license renewal
may be used. The new licensee will be required to complete a minimum of 30 hours of continuing
education per biennium for occupational therapists and 15 hours for occupational therapy assistants each subsequent license renewal.

805.2(3) With the exception of continuing education hours obtained by new licensees, no hours of
continuing education shall be carried over into the next biennium. A licensee whose license was reactivated during the current renewal compliance period may use continuing education earned during the compliance period for the first renewal following reactivation.
