Which states/countries require live courses/webinars for occupational therapy continuing education?
All 50 states accept live webinars as a form of occupational therapy continuing education, for some or all of their OT CEU requirements. (Please note: In order to fulfill the requirement, you will need to take a 5-question quiz following the webinar to earn your certificate.)
But, 4 states and one country require live courses (for which live webinars count:
- Florida – 14 hours
- Georgia – 12 hours
- Michigan – 10 hours
- Australia – 10 hours
And, at least two states makes it kinda hard to get all your CEUs without live courses:
- Kansas
- Tennessee
Here’s the details:
Florida requires 14 hours of live OT CEUs.
The state of Florida REQUIRES that at least 14 hours of occupational therapy continuing education must be in person or from interactive, real-time courses. (In total, Florida OTs/OTAs need 26 hours and they are due on February 28th of odd years.) OT Potential live webinars were deigned to meet this requirement.
Here’s the exact language lifted from the Word Document “Final 64B11-5.001”. Read our full guide on Florida CEUs here.
64B11-5.001 Requirements for License Renewal of an Active License; Continuing Education.
(3) At least fourteen (14) of the required hours per biennium must be in person or from interactive, real-time courses. An interactive, real-time course may be a web-based, satellite transmitted, telephone or video conference, or online instruction program that allows or requires the licensee to interact in real time, including live chat, with the instructor during the presentation of the program or in a question and answer session upon completion of the program.
The state of Georgia requires 12 hours of live OT CEUs
Georgia requires 12 hours of education related to direct patient care in occupational therapy practice. According to the OT Board’s FAQ, “these hours must be obtained through attendance at live presentations such as workshops, seminars, conferences, or formal academic coursework, or real-time, interactive webinars.” OT Potential live webinars were deigned to meet this requirement.
Here is the rule from the Georgia Administrative Code. Read our full guide on Georgia OT CEUs here.
Chapter 671-3 Rule 671-3-.08 Continuing Education
(3)(a) At least twelve (12) hours of the required twenty-four (24) continuing education hours must be on a topic related to direct patient care. This includes occupational therapy assessment, treatment planning, occupational therapy implementation and diagnostic related information. This must include attendance at live presentations such as workshops, seminars, conferences, or formal academic coursework, or real-time, interactive webinars. To qualify as a real-time, interactive webinar, the licensee must have the ability to ask questions, receive an answer, and interact with other attendees at the time the session is taking place. It may not be a pre-recorded session.
The state of Michigan requires 10 hours of live OT CEUs
The state of Michigan requires at least 10 hours of “live, synchronous, and interactive courses and programs, either in-person or virtual, that provide for the opportunity for direct interaction during the course or program” for each renewal cycle, which lasts 2 years.
OT Potential live webinars were deigned to meet this requirement.

Australia requires 10 hours of interactive OT CEUs
OT professionals in Australia need 20 hours of continued professional development.
- 5+ hours in an interactive setting with other practitioners
- Topics must focus on improving client outcomes and experiences within your scope and setting of practice
See our full guide to Australia OT CPD requirements.
Kansas does not require live CEUs per se, but it can be difficult to obtain all 40 hours without them.
The state of Kansas requires a whopping 40 hours of CEUs! There is not a rule that says you need live hours in this state. But, it does limit “self-study hours” to 20.
That means you either have to:
- Author/Co-Author a Professional Publication
- Present a Class I workshop or College Course
- Supervise a Level II Fieldwork Student
- Attend an In-Person Workshop/Conference
- Take College Course
- OR take a Live Webinar.
(This page from the Kansas State Association makes the breakdown of your options the most clear.)
Given the list above, you can see why many therapists end up taking live webinars versus something like presenting a college course. Read our full guide on Kansas CEU requirements here.
Tennessee does not require live CEUs per se, but it can be difficult to obtain all 23 credits without them.
Tennessee does not require live/interactive courses per se, but they do limit they number of “independent study” credits you can obtain. (And, you need to take two hours of courses to count for 1 credit, whereas in live-interactive courses 1 hour – 1 credit.) Verify here: Tennessee Board of OT FAQ
