Montana OT CEU Requirements & Discounts!

If you obtained your occupational therapy license in the state of Montana, you will need to earn continuing education units at required intervals in order to maintain your license. To help, I’m going to walk you through the steps I take to maintain my own occupational therapy license (and easily earn CEUs).

Step 1: Look up your OT/OTA license.

To begin the process, I always double-check that my license is displaying correctly. You can look up your Montana occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant license here.

Step 2: Confirm the Montana OT continuing education requirements. 

It’s always good to double check for any updates to your 2025 licensing cycle. (One year, I completed ALL of my state of Nebraska requirements only to find out that they were waived due to COVID. 😭)

But, to get you going here is the information I found, with links to where I found it.

Here are the basic OT/OTA CEU requirements in Montana:

Due annually at time of license renewal. Renewal period runs from April 17 – June 15.

How many hours are required?

  • OTs and OTAs need 10 hours of continuing education every year

Requirements:

  • Education hours should contribute directly to the practice of OT and to your professional competency
  • Documentation proving completion of education hours is required

Note: New OT professionals in Montana are not required to complete CE until after your first full year of licensure

Title 24 LABOR AND INDUSTRY
Chapter 24.165 BOARD OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY PRACTICE

24.165.2101 CONTINUING EDUCATION

(1) Licensees must complete ten hours of continuing education (CE) annually and shall affirm an
understanding of the recurring duty to comply with CE requirements as part of license renewal.
The CE requirement does not apply until a licensee’s first full year of licensure.

(2) The board may randomly audit up to 50 percent of renewed licensees.

(3) The licensee shall maintain records and documentation of completed CE and make the records
available upon board request.

(4) All CE must be germane to the profession and contribute to the professional competence of an
occupational therapist.

(5) The board shall accept any CE offered or approved by the Montana Occupational Therapy
Association, the American Occupational Therapy Association, the American Society of Hand
Therapists, the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT), or the American
Journal of Occupational Therapy.

(6) The board recognizes the maintenance of current NBCOT certification as fulfilling the CE
requirements of this rule.

(7) Continuing education may be earned: (see limitations for each activity in full chapter)
(a) through college course work
(b) by teaching courses or making professional presentations
(c) for apprenticeships involving supervised clinical experience aimed at return to practice or
developing specialized skills in occupational therapy
(d) by reading books germane to the profession
(e) by attending and participating in a live presentation (workshop, seminar, conference, inservice education program) or other CE activity requiring a formal assessment of learning
(electronic or web-based courses, formalized self-study courses)

(8) All Internet courses must meet the same criteria as in-person CE courses.

(9) Licensees found to be in noncompliance with CE requirements may be subject to administrative
suspension.
